Youth Volunteer Opportunities @ Community Based Organizations

Alzheimer Resource Center
Description: Volunteers needed for Saturday Retreat Respite program. Program provides protection for individuals and supervision for persons with dementia. Activities includes arts, crafts, exercise, music, and discussion groups.

Status: Accepts youth ages 12 and up, but 12-14 must have a parent or guardian present. Volunteers must be trained prior to volunteering. Training sessions are provided three times a year; however they will take a volunteer if the training session is only a month away.

American Red Cross
Description: American Red Cross Youth Corps is open to youth ages 14-18. Also help with disaster services, and administrative and light industrial work (washing vehicles, etc.) is needed.

America 's Second Harvest of the Big Bend
Description: Assist with lawn mowing, upkeep of landscaping, etc. Need rider (or driver) to assist with food pick-ups from area donors. Inspect and sort donations of grocery products according to food type. Filing. Assist with mass mailings. Data entry. Assist with newsletter.

Big Bend Cares
Description: Stuffing food bags for AIDS clients. Youth can go visit Big Bend Cares online to get a description of volunteer opportunities. Special events, office support, educational activities like HIV/AIDS and condoms teaching, or join the Big Bend Cares Youth Corps.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend, Inc
Description: Office Assistant- Help office staff with various projects.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big Bend
Description: Volunteers needed for the following positions:  Education Assistant/Tutor, Computer Lab Assistant, Recreation Assistant, & Reading Mentor.

Center for Caribbean Culture
Description: Need ushers for monthly African Caribbean Concerts.

Clare Bridge
Description: Helping with activities and projects for patients with Alzheimer's. Activities include playing card games, chess, checkers, singing, reading aloud, word puzzles, going for supervised walks, gardening, etc.

Status: Accepts 16 and up. Training necessary.

Comfort Pet Program
Description: We are a volunteer animal visitation group that serves the elder population of Leon County.  Owners and their pets visit long-term care facilities, day treatment programs, assisted living residences and rehabilitation centers to promote motivational, recreational and therapeutic benefits.  Please call for a listing of volunteer opportunities. Easter Seal Society of North Florida
Description: Assist with activities in an adult day care setting. Work with elderly and disabled persons playing games, talking walks, or doing arts and crafts.

Status: Accepts volunteers 16 and up. No training necessary.

Echo (Emergency Care Help Organization)
Description: Pantry needs to be stocked. Painting and cleaning.  Older youth are needed for reading to kids and to help supervise play. Individual volunteer play is scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Elder Care Services
Description: Meals on Wheels delivery, Food preparation, sanitation of kitchen, and some administrative and filing work is needed.

Status: Accepts volunteers 12 and up. No training necessary. 12-18 can work in daycare, 17 and up that have their drivers license can deliver food to clients, and 12-16 can also deliver food but they must be in the company of a parent or guardian.

Family Visitation Program
Description: Youth could clean and sort toys. Court ordered accepted.

Status: Accepts 12 and up. No training necessary. But volunteer opportunities are very limited because many of their clients cases are confidential. If they volunteer is 12-18, they can wash toys. Ages 19 and up can monitor visits, which will require training.

Kids Incorporated
Description: Help with Early Learning Programs: 1.) School Readiness Express Reader - Read age appropriate books to children in a child care center. 2.) Child Care assistant - Assist classroom teachers with care and education of children ages 6 weeks to 5 years in a child care center.

Leon County Human Society
Description: General office help, janitorial help, playing with and help with caring for animals.

Leon County Library Volunteer Program
Description: Assist Youth Services Information Desk Librarian by managing the Internet & Game computer sign- in, use and maintenance and other clerical duties as assigned.

Leon County Parks & Recreation
Description: Youth Sports Coach: Supervise practices and games of youths between the ages of 5 and 14 engaged in various organized sports such as flag football, soccer, and baseball.

Status: Accepts volunteers ages 9 and up. 9-12 must have a parent or guardian present.

Maclay Gardens
Description:
Learn about gardening techniques, help maintain the beautiful 28 acres of ornamental gardens, help park staff. Be a garden tour guide.

Mary Brogan Museum of Art
Description: Help set up new exhibits.  Help with parties held at the center.  Help with other special projects. Help prepare education materials for camp and science classes. Help with camps and exhibits.

Ronald McDonald House
Description: Volunteers help with answering phones and helping with walk-ins.  Checking our guests in and out.  Making sure light cleaning and yard work is done.  Sometimes volunteers are needed to help with special events. Volunteer slots are 9am - 12pm, 12pm - 3pm, 3pm - 6pm, and 6pm - 9pm.  Volunteers who can only come for one hour also accepted.

Tallahassee Little Theater
Description: Volunteer opportunities include: ushering, passing out tickets, acting, painting sets, serving refreshments, scenic painting, stage managing, costume assembling, being an assistant director, being a lighting designer or builder, being a refreshment coordinator, or being a photographer or graphic artist.

Description: Trail Station Volunteer: Assist visitors with crafts, projects, games, and other activities associated with the trail station. Enter museum collections and record information into the computer database.

VolunteerLEON Youth Corps    
Description: Youth Corps members are needed to help out in the VolunteerLEON office weekly, (Monday-Friday from 3:00 p.m. till 5:00 p.m.) This is an opportunity to become active in program development and planning, practice your administrative skills (typing, filing, calling community organizations, etc.) and earn volunteer hours at the same time! Help is also needed in the office for grant, scholarship and awards research!
