VolunteerLEON, the Leon County Volunteer Center

Knowledge, Information and Neighbors in Disaster

KIND - Knowledge, Information and Neighbors in DisasterKnowledge Information & Neighbors in Disaster (KIND), VolunteerLEON’s EPRO project, will focus on two groups of the disabled, those with a sensory disability limiting sight or hearing and those with a condition limiting basic physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs, reaching, lifting, or carrying. The goals of KIND are to (1.) provide equal access to disaster preparedness and warning information to our community’s most vulnerable citizens, (2.) ensure their self sufficiency for at least 72 hours following a disaster, and (3.) match them with volunteers from the faith-based organizations and the community at-large within their neighborhood thus increasing Leon County’s capacity to respond to their needs before, during, and after a disaster. This initiative is funded by a grant from Volunteer Florida and the Corporation for National and Community Service

Safety of Seniors

Safety of Seniors logoA minimum of 165 volunteers, ages 12 and over, will be recruited for the Safety of Seniors project through presentations to area churches and faith based organizations, schools, civic clubs, and current rosters of volunteers. The service-oriented multigenerational, multicultural interaction between inter-faith teams of youth and seniors will build long-term sustainable relationships, and provide our elderly population with support and hope in the event of a disaster. The Volunteer Center will issue a series of press releases and public service announcements via radio and print media to recruit volunteers, write articles for neighborhood association newsletters, promote the project on the county public access channel, and increase awareness of SOS through community donation drives and partnerships. This initiative is funded by a grant from the Points of Light Foundation and the Universal Peace Federation.
