Leon County's Student Internship Program

Fall 2002

The Leon County Volunteer Center Internship Program was developed for two basic reasons: 1.) to provide local college students with hands-on work experience in a public sector work environment and 2.) to provide Leon County agencies with a high quality, yet, low-cost human resource pool. Although Student Interns are not provided with monetary compensation, they are provided with invaluable opportunities to apply academic skills, to broaden work-related knowledge, to increase employment visibility and to network.

Placement Process

The internship placement process is very simple. Students are screened by the Internship Coordinator who works with students to match their skills/areas of interest with available positions. The Internship Coordinator maintains a complete listing of internship positions available in the county. After the initial screening, students are referred to the appropriate Departments. The Department contacts the student for an interview to ensure that the student is suitable for the position (if for some reason the Department fails to make contact within five working days, the student should inform the Internship Coordinator). If the intern is acceptable, the supervisor will give the student a starting date. The student should then contact the Internship Coordinator regarding the starting date.

At the end of the semester, the intern submits all evaluation and hour report forms to the Internship Coordinator. Upon the successful submission of all required forms, the intern will receive an official certificate of completion and letter of recognition- both of which are signed by the Leon County Administrator.
