Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend Region

Major Objectives:

The Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend Region (ELC) serves children and families located in the Big Bend region. The Coalition strives to create a seamless system of services to better prepare children for entry into kindergarten by providing information resources to aid parents in finding quality child care, holding screenings and assessments to identify any developmental issues in children, and offering technical assistance and professional development opportunities to child care providers.
An intern with ELC will assist the Coalition in completing state-required developmental assessments on School Readiness children through out the area.

While interning with ELC interns will:

  • Develop personal communication skills and an understanding of organization communication systems within the agency
  • Develop ability to analyze organizational and systems processes for activities assigned by the supervisor
  • Develop teamwork skills
  • Gain knowledge of assessment skills and requirements for children ages 0 to 5 years of age enrolled in the School Readiness Program.
  • Gain knowledge of functional operations of early learning programs

Responsibilities:

  • Work with early learning providers to conduct pre/post assessments on a random selection of children enrolled (ages birth to five years old) in the School Readiness program
  • Score completed assessments in compliance with the tool directions
  • Provide written feedback on children’s development and an individualized learning plan for the teacher and activities for the parents (If applicable)
  • Maintain organized records (physical and electronic) of child assessments that are pending and completed

Qualifications:

Preferred currently enrolled in degree program at a college or university. In addition, intern should have experience working in Windows software environment, excellent organizational skills, a professional attitude and demeanor, and professional written and oral communication skills. Intern must be comfortable working with young children

Time and Place:

The Tallahassee office is open from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Mornings are best for completing assessments; however, interns may put in additional hours in the afternoon. The intern will be working out of the Tallahassee office with travel to childcare providers to perform assessments.

Commitment:

Interns will be needed though June 2008; however, it is desired interns stay at least through November 2007 to complete the first segment of the assessment project. There are no requirements regarding minimum or maximum hours per week. It is suggested interns put in at least ten hours per week.
