Title:

At-Large Commission Intern Specialist

Major Objectives:

This competitive position will expose the student to the workings of the Leon County Commission and the office of the Chairman.  Commissioner Thaell is one of only two County Commissioners elected Aat-large@ in Leon County, Florida.  As such, research, public information and constituent service operations are of a county-wide nature.  He is also the Chairman of the Leon County Commission, and is President of the Florida Association of Counties, and as such deals with critical legislative issues important to county governments statewide. Commissioner Thaell=s priorities as an elected official are neighborhood preservation, conservation and ecological preservation, public health, and economic and social justice issues.

Educational Objectives:

Successful applicants will learn the basics of constituent service, public relations and administration, and will experience first-hand the functioning of local government at the policy level.  They will learn through experience the complex relationships between state, county and municipal governments in Florida, and will also learn government procedure, protocol and rules of conduct in a politically sensitive environment.  In addition to daily operations, students are expected to chose and complete one semester research project in consultation with the Commissioner and his/her major professor.

Responsibilities:

Correspondence and communications, file management, erranding, issue research, database management and assisting with meetings and public events.

Qualifications:

Upper college undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Public Administration, Political Science, Law, Urban and Regional Planning, or other relevant field of study. 

Training and Preparation:

Students must have excellent interpersonal, telephone and computer skills, be task-oriented and able to follow direction, and must be able to demonstrate good judgment in a professional and politically sensitive environment.

Commitment:

For class credit, 15-25 hours per week for one academic semester.  All semesters available.  For audit or no class credit, minimum of 10 hours per week -- semester research project requirement still applies.
