On
Monday, August 25, 2003, VolunteerLEON welcomed the new AmeriCorps*VISTA,
Vickee Syes, to serve as the new Youth Corps Coordinator. Ms. V, as she
likes to be called, brings a wealth of knowledge to the organization
including a background in public and media relations, education, program
planning, and community service. She will continue to promote our youth
program by building service-learning partnerships with local public
schools and community-based organizations. In addition, she will serve
as an an advisor and project coordinator to VolunteerLEON's Youth Corps.
To kick of the campaign in building partnerships with local schools,
Ms. V spent the day with students at Fairview Middle School on
Wednesday, September 10. The principal, Dr. Roger Pinholster, wanted
students to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism with a program he
called 'Helping Hands Day'.
Ms.
V promoted volunteerism and spoke about the many opportunities that are
available for young volunteers. Students were provided a list of
community organizations that specifically requests young
volunteers. The message was loud and clear that community service
is for everyone and anyone regardless of their age, socio-economic
background or education, and it is not only for those who have done
something bad or committed a crime. Ms. V grabbed the students'
attention with her game show called 'The Strongest Link' which allowed
students to be contestants and receive prizes for participation.
Throughout the game, students were also able to reflect on the
characteristics of volunteers who help to make a difference in our
communities.
Ms. V is available to make presentations at schools in Leon County in
order to promote the spirit of volunteerism and service-learning.
If you would like her to visit your school, or have any questions for
her, please e-mail Ms. V at syesv@leoncountyfl.gov.
