July 2003 -  Capital Area American Red Cross Salutes Local Volunteers

Celebration 2003, a special evening of recognition for Capital Area Red Cross Chapter volunteers at The Moon on Monday June 23, 2003.  "For 86 years this Red Cross Chapter has been serving the residents of Florida's Big Bend," said Karen Hagan, Executive Director of the Capital Area Chapter. "Red Cross volunteers are part of the very fabric of this community, and the reason why we are making people's lives safer every day. With a volunteer to paid staff ratio of 833 to 1, you can see why we want to recognize such special people."  This upbeat event featured Anna Johnson-Riedel as the Master of Ceremonies, music by The Big Kahunas, food by Jim & Milts, cakes by Publix, and hundreds of Red Cross volunteers who were honored by the Chapter.

Other evening highlights included these awards:

• The “Coach Pete” Griffin Award for Volunteerism to Alma Walker

• The Humanitarian of the Year Award to Zilpah Boyd

• The Donna O’Meara Chairman’s Awards to Bob Scott and Robin Lotane

Community Partners Awards to:

• Florida State University Campus Recreation Department

• Bryan Desloge and Desloge Home Oxygen

Red Cross Service pins were given to the following individuals:

• Hannie Tterlikkus - 50 years of service

• Ivan Johnson – 55 years of service

• Buck Caruthers – 60 years of service

And finally…

• The American Red Cross Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Faye Rioux
