On
behalf of the Leon County Volunteer Center, we wish to extend our
sincere thanks and appreciate to the more than 300 citizens that
answered our call for volunteers to staff Volunteer Florida's Volunteer
and Donations Hotline. Volunteers fielded over 10,000 calls from people
all over the country wanting to lend a helping hand and to contribute
resources and needed dollars to assist with the response and recovery
efforts following Hurricanes Charley and Frances. If you are able to share your time and friendly
voice with us again, please call VolunteerLEON at 921-3015 to sign up
for a shift.
No community is immune to the
havoc and devastation caused by disaster. No one can predict when a
disaster will occur or what type of disaster it might be. What we do
know is that it will require the
assistance
of many volunteers working together to respond to it. One of the best
ways citizens can prepare to assist in relief effort is to become an
trained, affiliated volunteer with a disaster relief agency such as the
American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Long before a disaster
strikes, these volunteers know where to report and what their
responsibilities will be.
The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting a
training blitz September 10-12, 2004. All training is free! Classes will
be taught on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9AM and 1PM. You can go to
all the classes or just choose the ones you're interested in attending.
The Introduction course is required before participating in other
trainings, and will be taught on Friday, September 10 at 6PM., for more
information or to sign up visit their website.
