VolunteerLEON's Featured Story - October 2006

Want to help out during a disaster?

Attend the November 11th informational session from 9am through noon to learn more about how you can get involved. As part of the local preparedness team, you can:

  • Educate individuals who are dependent on electricity for medical reasons on registering with their emergency manager.

  • Mentor an individual who is developing a disaster preparedness and evacuation plan.

  • Provide free training to volunteers and organizations on disaster issues, volunteer management, grassroots leadership, and conflict resolution.

  • Organize a disaster supply kit drive to benefit individuals who cannot afford them.

  • Coordinate and publicize events, trainings, and meetings.

  • Serve as a member of the community steering committee.

  • Research which neighbors you have that might need assistance with preparedness and warning information.

  • Assist the Emergency Operations Center with rumor control.

  • Interview potential volunteers to determine their skills & availability to respond after a disaster.

  • And lots more!

Civic, corporate, student, faith-based, grassroots, and fraternal organizations are encouraged to send at least two representatives to learn about community need and response in the event of an emergency. Please register and RSVP by emailing Mary Prentice at PrenticeM@leoncountyfl.gov by Thursday, November 8th. This informational session will be held at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library from 9am - noon.  Learn more about VolunteerLEON's disaster preparedness and response initiatives.
