Jeb Bush recognized VolunteerLEON Youth Corps as the Points of Light
Award recipient for the week of August 8th.
“
The members of VolunteerLEON Youth Corps are
undeniable catalysts for social betterment and involvement within their
communities,” said Governor Bush. “I am proud to see Leon County youth
demonstrating an eagerness and determination to making a difference in
the lives of their peers and neighbors.”
VolunteerLEON Youth Corps mobilizes Tallahassee teens
to actively take a role in the community through hard work, service and
leadership. The Youth Corps members, ranging in ages 12 to 18,
participate in peer-to-peer trainings, establish partnerships with local
community-based organizations and schools, and participate in community
events with adult groups. Presently, the organization is focused on the
“HEADS UP” initiative, an acronym for HIV/AIDS - Environment - Animals -
Disasters & Disabilities - School Improvement - Understanding
Intergenerational Issues - Prevention.
The Youth Corps earned the 2004 Tallahassee Democrat
Volunteer of the Year award. The group is credited with establishing the
Big Bend MLK Dream Award Diversity, Reflection, Education, Arts and
Multi-generational and has published the Pet Safety for Seniors During
Hurricane Season brochure.
“Incorporating service-learning into the activities
of VolunteerLEON Youth Corps allows for an increases youth ownership in
service activities and the community as a whole,” said Jeri Bush,
Director of VolunteerLEON Youth Corps.
The Governor's Point of Light Award, sponsored by
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, recognizes a
Florida resident or organization that demonstrates exemplary service to
the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges
composed of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate
all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. Volunteer
Florida Foundation manages the program.
