In celebration of
National Family Volunteer Day 2004, VolunteerLEON Youth Corps, as well
as their parents and siblings worked with local AmeriCorps members to
construct a ramp for a person in our community, enabling that person to
continue living independently. The ramp constructed on National
Family Volunteer Day was the last in a series of 6 ramps built for area
residents with disabilities during Volunteer Florida, Albertson's,
AmeriCorps, Ability1st, Volunteer Leon and Department of Environmental
Protection's initiative called 6 Days 6 Ramps. Volunteer duties
included safety coordination, framing, carpentry, decking, scrap
retrieval, and food service. Read about 6 Days 6 Ramps online at http://6days6ramps.volunteerflorida.org/.
National Family Volunteer Day
is held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and kicks off
National Family Week. Volunteering as a family provides quality time,
strengthens communication, and provides opportunities for family members
to be role models, while making significant contributions to their
communities. Family volunteering creates life-long volunteers and a
legacy of volunteering for the next generation to carry into the future!
