A Leon County volunteer organization won the weekly Points of Light Award on
Wednesday.
Gov. Jeb Bush presented the award to VolunteerLEON Youth Corps. The award
recognizes Florida residents and organizations for exemplary community service.
"The members of VolunteerLEON Youth Corps are undeniable catalysts for social
betterment and involvement within their communities," Bush said. "I am proud to
see Leon County youth demonstrating an eagerness and determination to making a
difference in the lives of their peers and neighbors."
Established in 2000 with only five volunteers, VolunteerLEON Youth Corps now
mobilizes more than 300 Tallahassee youths aged 12 to 18 to play a role in the
community. The organization conducts peer-to-peer trainings and is active with
local community-based organizations and schools.
The Youth Corps received the 2004 Tallahassee Democrat Volunteer of
the Year award and is credited with establishing the Big Bend MLK Dream Award
and publishing a brochure about pet safety for seniors during hurricane season.
"Incorporating service-learning into the activities of VolunteerLEON Youth
Corps allows for and increases youth ownership in services and the community as
a whole," said Jeri Bush, director of Youth Corps.
Youth Corps will receive a congratulatory letter from Gov. Bush and a
certificate acknowledging its leadership. This fall, all award recipients from
the year will be honored with a reception at the Governor's Mansion.
