18 year old Leon County Volunteer
Firefighter Wins the 2008 Jefferson Award for Public Service
Kristopher Hook won the 2008
Jefferson Award for Public Service at the Tallahassee Democrat
Volunteers of the Year Awards Luncheon. It is the highest award given to
a volunteer in the area. Kristopher will represent Leon County in June
at the prestigious 2008 Jefferson Awards for Public Service banquet in
Washington, D.C.
Kristopher a Maclay School senior is a volunteer firefighter and medical
responder with the Bradfordville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department.
Once his school day ends, he turns his pager on and responds to
emergencies. In the past year, he's completed hundreds of training hours
in his field. He followed in his father's footsteps. Karl Hook as a
volunteer at the Bradfordville station last year. Kristopher's pager
goes off an average of three times a day and sometimes he has to get up
at 2 a.m. to respond to an emergency.
In the fall, Kristopher will attend Florida State University, where he
plans to study medicine. "I've got experience with trauma," Kristopher
said. "I think I'd like to be able to ... after the firefighters and EMS
gets there ... be the one in the emergency room helping out in the
second part of the call."
Congratulations to all of the deserving nominees, finalists and winners
of the 2008 Tallahassee Democrat's Volunteers of the Year. Special
thanks to the Tallahassee Democrat for 30 years of gathering our
community to honor our greatest treasure, volunteers. It is one of the
most looked forward to events of the year and we sincerely appreciate
this legacy of recognizing and honoring what's right in Tallahassee.
